 In Memoriam

Michael Homfray-Davies (1948-2017)

It is with the greatest sorrow that we report the death of Michael Homfray-Davies, on 21 July 2017, at the age of 69, following an automobile accident in Prague (Czech Republic).

Michael served as a member of the EALCJ Secretariat and as the Association’s Treasurer between 1999-2013. On relinquishing those positions, he then took on the challenging task of Conference Organiser – a role from which he had only this Summer stepped down. Michael’s commitment and dedication culminated with the Association’s highly successful 21st Annual Conference, organised in Prague during June 2017. As had now become his hallmark, a social programme of local eating experiences, a cruise on the Vlatava River, and a gala dinner with stunning views over Prague from the Strahov Monastery, perfectly balanced two days of technical working sessions, and underscored the sense of “family” which has bound the Association together for over twenty years.

Born in London on 7 July 1948, Michael was called to the Bar and practised law in Birmingham and Chester, dealing primarily with Criminal, Family and Children matters. From 1993 he held judicial office as a Chairman of Industrial Tribunals (later as Employment Judge) in the Liverpool region of the Employment Tribunals of England & Wales, until a degenerative eye condition caused him to take early retirement after 15 years of service. Since his judicial retirement, Michael had found a new focus of activity in the developing field of Mindfulness, together with his new wife, Hana. Following their marriage, Michael and Hana settled in the Czech Republic.

The European Association of Labour Court Judges places on record its enormous debt of gratitude for the contributions made by Michael to the Association, and conveys its profound sympathies to Hana and to Michael’s daughters and wider family.
